Dragon Rider

Librarian: Mrs. Worobek - November 19, 2008 - 11:40am

The author Cornelia Funke tells the story about a boy and his magical creatures that join him on a dangerous journey that will hold the future for weather or not dragons will survive or die out like other races of the magical community in the book Dragon Rider. The book starts out with Firedrake and Sorrel hiding out in the mountains with other dragons only to be intruded by a rat saying that humans are coming. Once Firedrake tells the others about this misfortune they don’t believe him but then come to realization once the eldest dragon Slatebeard tells them that it has not been the first time humans had taken over their homes. After long suggestions about what to do Firedrake offers to go in search of the Rim of Heaven with Sorrel to see if this place where the dragons used to hide along time ago exists. A few days go bye when they stop to rest and stumble among a boy hiding among boxes. Sorrel after smelling the boy at first doesn’t take to kindly that Firedrake has offered the boy Ben to come along with them so that he may read the map a rat had given them. Along the journey they have met other humans who want to help dragons live in peace and not so friendly creatures who would rather eat dragons then try and help them. One of the creatures they meet on the way to find the Rim of Heaven is another dragon Nettlebrand who was created by an alchemist to destroy dragons in order to get their horns. Nettlebrand then becomes the villain in the book after he says he’s going to kill every last dragon if it’s the last thing he does. With this he follows the group all over the world before they find the Rim of Heaven Ben soon realizes that they are being followed when he sees the sun reflect on the gold armor of Nettlebrand. At the end of the book Ben, Firedrake, Sorrel, and Twigleg stop Nettlebrand after tricking him into thinking that they where leading him to other other dragons but where actually just leading him to an empty cave inside the Rim of Heaven. After this Ben goes to live with a family they had met on the way and Firedrake and Sorrel both go back to their old village to tell them the great news and help them find the way to the Rim of Heaven where they may live in peace.

Some part of me and maybe the other readers that have read this book are sort of jealous of Ben. That maybe not the fact that he got to have an adventure with a bunch of magical creatures but just the fact that at age 10 Ben has been all over the world and his life is just beginning. In the sense that he hasn’t really lived much of his life yet and still gets to travel and explore the world first hand instead of just reading about earth and the creatures that have come to inhabit the earth as their home. As a kid I had similar interests as Ben for the fact that when I was small I believed that dragons and unicorns existed and that the reasons that they never showed themselves was because their where grown-ups around and where to afraid of what they would do and I have to admit that some part of me still believes that, the part of me that doesn’t want to grow-up. Some of the pressures that Firedrake has had to go through is that in the book Ben gets snatched from him by a giant bird and in that instant Firedarke has to make the decision of weather or not to fly off coarse to save Ben and get lost or to save Ben and hope that by a miracle they get to the Rim of Heaven before Nettlebrand does. Even though these thought probably went through Firedrakes head he didn’t hesitate in action to save Ben and get him back from the creature that had taken him. Making this decision that Firedrake did just shows that know matter what the dragons back at his village can always count on him not to give up which is what I think he has proven by the decision he made and does make further on in the book that helped him and his friends find the Rim of heaven and defeat Nettlebrand from whipping out he dragons population.

Readers that have read this book get the sense that even though Ben is enjoying his time with his friends and the adventures that they have he hasn’t really felt a sense of belonging before but now Ben can find that sense of safety that before he’s never experience since he didn’t have a family until Firedrake and Sorrel. Even though this sense of safety he feel with the dragon is fictional only because they don’t exist to the real world that doesn’t mean that the feeling he is feeling isn’t real. When I was growing up I was raised by my grandparents because my mom wasn’t around much and my dad wasn’t aloud to see me for reason I don’t and still don’t know. So my grandparents where lest with the responsibilities for giving me and my little sister the sort of support and safety that my parents should have but not being around couldn’t give. Some of the review that this book has gotten and the author Cornelia Funke some of the reviews where good but of coarse when their is good there is always bad right behind it. The reviews this book has gotten of her life writing books not some much to be popular but to see if others shared her interests in the fantasy of magic and magical creatures the way she did.

Hearts Afire

Librarian: Mrs. Worobek - November 18, 2008 - 11:12am

Hearts Afire is written by Marta Perry, who writes books for the Love Inspired Collection. She also writes the Flanagans series. This book is about a paramedic/fire fighter Terry Flanagan and a doctor Jake Landsdowne. Terry was granted a clinic at a migrant camp, and Jake was the head leader of the clinic. A girl named Manuela wants to work at the clinic but her dad doesn’t allow it. During time Terry learns more about Jake and how he blames himself for the death of Meridith. So then Jake went to Africa on a missionary for doctors to work at Africa. He came back to this place and now the past has caught up to him. It was later that Terry had found out that Jake had Malaria. Soon after Jake got better he asked Mr. Dixon the owner of the migrant camp to let Manuela stay for some of school, but Mr. Dixons son Andrew said no. Later Manuela ran and fell off a cliff, shoe broke a leg and Terry found her. Terry went to get help, she ran down and saw Jake who then called for emergency rescues to come and retrieve Manuela. Later Mr. Dixon had asked Manuela’s family to have a permanent home and to work for him permanently. Later Jake decides what feelings he now has for Terry and Terry has very strong feelings for Jake.

This book talks a lot about the unconditional love of two people, and how they work out their problems differently. This love bound story has lots of strings to untie before they can move on. Like Jake and his family, Jake’s family are wealthy and his dad is a neurosurgeon who wants Jake to take his place. But Jake wants to take his own path in life. But for Terry, she has a family who looks out for one another and they support each other no matter what they do in life. So Jake wants a family that is supportive through the hard times, now he is accepted in Terry family. He is now showered in love and joy that this family has bestode before him. Jake had also shut himself from the old world that he used to know, but now that he has come back to this world he finds things difficult. He starts asking himself is this what I really want. People change their minds and some people who care about him, like his family don’t like the idea of him not taking his fathers place.

Sure this book talks about two people falling in love but it isn’t a mushy gushy story. This has feelings of two people like hate, anger, frustration, and friendship. This book talks a lot about how frustrating it is to figure out their own feelings. It’s true it is hard find what kind of feelings you have towards someone. And people who work with other certain people, have to learn to control their feelings, so that they don’t get in the way to much with their work. And this also talks about decisions made by the feelings and what they want in life. People can’t decide for you, you have to take action of your own life. If you want to be a Novelist or a Doctor, and your parents want you to be a lawyer or something like that. You can’t let them just say who you are going to be, it’s your life and you can’t have your parents decide for you. Yea sure they want to help or have you in a high paying job. But it is you who needs to do something that you are interested, If you enjoy things that relates to a career that you want to do then do it. Nothing is holding you back. If you don’t know what to do in life then explore your options take a look at a world through your eyes. Like Jake he didn’t want to take his fathers place because he felt that is wasn’t right for him and that he didn’t want to move cause he loved the people who lives in this little town and he especially loved Terry. Plus when he made his decision to stay with terry it wasn’t to make his parents mad or anything like that, it was because he had moved on and he wanted to stay somewhere, where he is at peace. Maybe we all want to be at peace when we stay some where, right? When we all graduate we might go to collage, or maybe settle down and start a job right off the bat. For me it is go somewhere new and start a new life and leave the past behind, but keep the memories in my heart. And I know that most of your parents want you be something else rather than what you want to be. And My mom does that to me, she wants me to do something that I don’t want to do. In fact I have no clue what to do with my life after grad. Maybe I’ll settle down and start some kind of job. Or go to collage and go for the Ranching area. But still I have no clue what to do, just like Jake I ain’t sure of my self. What I am getting at that this relates to this book is that Jake was lost in his life, had no clue what to do next. And his parents were deciding on his future. Terry on the other hand let life role by and she went along. She had always stuck up for her self and she had a family that let her decide and supported her ideas. For some people tat would be nice if their family was like that, but unfortunately not all families are like that. Some parents have their children’s lives set just they way want it, some don’t even care what they do cause they just care for them selves. And for most families they support their children’s dreams of being something. In families I think of love, security, and happiness. Sure not all families show this, but some do even when times are hard. If you think about it children can’t even have a decent future. Like Manuela she was a migrant, so her family had to move to farms just to make a living. Even though her family was poor they didn’t lack in love and security.

Can people decide through anger? Can people decide for themselves? Can we just get along with others that we have had a bad history with? These questions are answered slowly by us as we move through this Journey of life. We all have a life to go through and we all have someone to meet in our lives. Whether it was and old friend or a new friend.

Dragon Rider

Librarian: Mrs. Worobek - November 14, 2008 - 11:06am

In the Dragon Riders you would think that someone who was born into the world to save the existence of the dragon world would at least be over the age of 20. Guess again Ben only being 10 years old has to save the very existence of dragons because if not then the humans that fear them will probably stuff the dragons and put them in museums. Even though Ben’s companions Firedrake (the dragon), Sorrel (the forest brownie), and Twigleg ( the homunculus aka for those of you that don’t know what that is a mini human figure that a alchemist put life into). Will have to embark on a dangerous adventure filled with magical creatures that humans thought to be extinct and very friendly humans that only want the dragons to live safely among them. This book had me captivated at the very beginning even though at first I had been confused because I was just starting the book but after words I had a real sense of the characters and I got to know that characters myself from the descriptions given by the author. Some of the values that where shown in this book was that even though times got rough for our young travelers they still managed to keep on going for the good of the other dragons and managed to find the Rim of Heaven after all. This just goes to show that perseverance and determination are great combinations to help anyone out.

The book starts out at the last few remaining dragons layer where they hear the news from a rat that humans are coming to take over the land that the dragons are living in. After long discussions about what they should do to prevent the humans from finding them. Should they hide like before when the humans came or should they run and leave in search for a new home. It was then decided that Firedrake would go in search for the Rim of Heaven where it is said that other dragons live and that the Rim of Heaven has great protection from the humans and it a lovely place for dragons to live in harmony with humans without them knowing they exist. Sorrel the brownie then decides that she will come along to keep Firedrake safe from the humans. On their journey to find the rats cousin for a map of where they must go to find the Rim of Heaven they come across a path with a human boy named Ben who then joins them in their quest. This is where the story carries are friends into situations after situations that go from bad to worst and then from good to a miracle. Along the way, they will discover allies in odd places, courage they didn’t know they had, and a hidden destiny that changes everything.

Chapter after chapter is filled with excitement and action with other magical creatures that I’ve never heard of before when I was growing up. Even though this book is meant for older kids Dragon Rider helps you get in touch with your kiddy side again. This book helped me remember how much I used to love to pretend that magical creatures really did exist and that the only reason why I never saw one is because they lived in a different place far away from the humans that didn’t like to believe in fairy tales ( grown ups for example). In one part of the book Firedrake shows that friendship is more important than his own life. This act of kindness shows that no matter where you come from and what kind of creature you are friendship comes to those that deserve the friends. Dragon Rider is a book that will be good for all ages that are able to read. I hope that this book will be able to captivate those that have the imagination and love magical creatures as much as I used to when I was a kid.

Allowable Monthly Costs

Counselling Office - November 8, 2008 - 2:49pm

New mailout just came in from Student Finance Dept. It lists some allowable monthly costs that can be applied for on Student Loans. In summary:

  • Living away costs are $429 for rent/mortgage/utilities and $512 for food/clothing/transportation/etc.
  • Living at home costs are $432 for food/clothing/transportation/etc.

Special considerations may be given if the amounts you are applying for are more than this. You will have to give a copy of rent or mortgage agreement and copies of utility bills for the last three months.

If you work part-time during school the first $800 you make every month is exempt and will not affect your student loan.

Applications may be made in paper or online. Both are available in the late spring. Unfortunately you can apply online using a Macintosh computer. BOO! (Editorial comment: This just screams of laziness on the part of Alberta Education in not getting decent programmers for varioius web browsers other than Internet Explorer. If Google or Ebay or Amazon or . . . even Microsoft can get their sites to work on any computer than so can Alberta.)

To apply you will need your Alberta Student Number (ask at school). To find out how student loans work, complete the Counselling sesson on the EDULINX site. Or you can call 1-800-222-6485.

The Luckiest Girl- Final Review

Librarian: Mrs. Worobek - November 7, 2008 - 1:27pm

Beverley Cleary is the author of The luckiest girl as well as her several award winning books for children and teenagers. Beverley was raised in a town called Yamhill, it was so small that there was no library. Her mother had to get books for Beverley to read from the State Library. Which obviously paid off for her in the long run, Beverley was the Children’s Librarian in Yakima, Washington, until she married Clarence Cleary and moved to California.

The Clearys are the parents of twins, now grown. Beverly found in herself after being a librarian for many years that she had the ability to write. She has since written series of books that are both fiction and non-fiction that are great for young adults such as myself. I find them great to read in and out of the classroom. I have read many of her books, which I have also enjoyed. I plan to read many more of them.

This book is about a 16-year-old girl that is not quite sure of what she wants to be viewed as, or in what way she would like to be treated. Which I hope is normal because I have these troubles at 15. Her name is Shelley Latham she, like many of us kids were stuck in that stage of wanting and trying to grow up, but her parents of course wanted her to stay there little girl. Shelley didn’t understand this so she was frusrtated at this fact. She never took into view of what others around her thought, until she moved to California with her mothers former college roommate and best friend Mrs. Michie and her husband Mr. Michie.

hey had two kids one boy who’s name was luke and close to Shelley’s age, and one 13-year-old girl named Katie. Katie was at the not so magical age for a young girl, actually probably one of the worst ages for a young girl. I remember that dreadful year we all got back to school realizing our clothes didn’t fit the way we wanted, we couldn’t wear what we wanted, and the girls were all taller than the boys so everything was all awkward and not the way it was “suppose” to be.

After living with the Michies for nine whole months she realized from Mrs. Michie and Katie’s relationship that fact that every girl and boy has to take in to consideration, That as much as you want to grow up and be independent your parents want you to be there little girl/boy. That will probably never change even as an adult but they to have to take into consideration that you need to grow up. So in the long run it will work out, and what I have heard more times than one is to enjoy your life as a child you’ll soon have to be working to pay the bills and have to take care for your own children. So when my parents don’t let me go out on weekends, I do take that into consideration of course after I make a big deal out of it.

I thought this story tied more into the human condition-in search of self focus question. Because Shelley was always trying to please others or go for clothes, boys, and hairstyles that were liked by others in her school . I guess I would say that she hadn’t found her own self. Throughout this novel Shelley truly found herself and wasn’t afraid to show who she was or what she liked, and who she liked and shared the same interests as. She really discovered her own person, which is an inspiration to me because I am still trying to do just that.

The Defender: Full Book Review

Librarian: Mrs. Worobek - November 7, 2008 - 11:01am

In my book “the Defender” I really got a connection with it. Turgen who is a older man, who lives in the mountains by himself up there alone, was once probably one of the best hunters in the mountain region, had given up his profession due to the cruel in humane ways the hunters from the south would kill the animals, especially the mountain rams. When I read that it made me feel sick how these so called hunters would kill these animal of such beautiful nature. they shouldn’t have even been called that, to brutally murder a magnificent creature of nature. When I read on more I found out way he lived alone up there in the mountains, His wife and son were killed by a deadly disease that he could not prevent from happening, That made me feel horrible for Turgen, because I to know what it feels like to have someone close to you die from a disease that is incurable, it is hard to get over something like that.

Plus another reason why he lived alone up there, was because the old shaman who was very jealous of Turgen, so when Turgen was at a get together with all the people from the valley, the shaman would do a very cruel and untrue thing to Turgen, the shaman cried out to the people an said that Turgen was a sorcerer and believed in the devil and his work. When I read that I wanted to punch the shaman for saying that about Turgen because it was very untrue, So for along time Turgen did not go into the village to get supplies, he would get the local merchant to come and bring supplies for him. One day on his way back from catching some wild game in the forest he could hear some one cry and a cow moo-ing from his neighbor Marfa’s yurt but could not see any smoke coming from the chimney, and that was not a good sign to see epecailly in the horrible weather. So he rushed in to find a little boy by the name of Tim trying to get the fire going.

Turgen asked where his mother was and he said she was working and should have already been back, so Turgen be as kindhearted as he was he said to Tim do not worry about the fire I will get it going for you. With in minutes of Turgen relighting the fire the yurt was full of life and warm again. Tim said Turgen his little sister’s name was Aksa, turgen stayed for a little while then left figuring that Marfa should be back. Later in the book Turgen was look at the cliff to see some playful mountain rams jump from ledge to ledge, he was look at them with a keen eye, he looked at what they were able to eat in this land they called home. it made him wonder and me wonder what he was going to do next. That night in his sleep he had an idea to make a slay and take them good food to eat, so he pursued his dream and took them his offer to where he knew nothing could get at them (like a bear or wolves). Myself I thought that was the best thing he could have ever done for these animals. as he did this more and more often they would come a little closer to him but still stay at a safe distance from him. One day as he was just leaving the feeding ground he heard a gun shot.

Then another gun shot a few seconds later, they were for enough way, but still close enough to give a scare, then the herd headed for a little bridge that goes across a ravine, when most of the herd was across one of the lambs fell off and landed in the ravine, Turgen went and rescued the little one, and took him back to the yurt, where he found that he dislocated one of his hind legs and also had a cut on at. so he put it back in place and put a splint on it. He kept this playful little lamb for a couple weeks until it was time for him to go back to his herd. I felt sad for Turegn when he had to let this beautiful little creature who he grown to love have to take it back to its home.

A month or two after Turgen asked Marfa to marry him in the village church, when it was closer to the wedding Turgen still did not he a best man, so he asked the only man who did not still believe that he was a sorcerer, the merchant. He planned every thing for Marfa’s and Turgen’s wedding, so the big day Turgen did not expect everyone from the village to be at the wedding. They did not say things about him being a sorcerer, they said he was a lucky man to have a good women and she was very lucky to have such a wonder man to be her husband. after there wedding they had a feast at a neighbor’s house and just enough drinks for people just to get in cheerful mood. Turgen, Marfa watched Tim and Aksa grow up to be wonderful people and Tim take over the duties of watching over the rams. Marfa was the first to pass away and when it was Turgens time he said to Tim take care of the rams and watch over my lad for me. I personally did like this book it was something different to read, and that is sometimes a good thing. How one man lost his trust from his friend and in him self and had to regain that back.

She’s So Money Book Review

Librarian: Mrs. Worobek - November 6, 2008 - 11:42am

This tale starts when Overachiever Maya’s parents decide to take a well deserved holiday from their Thai restaurant and leave Maya in charge, positive that she will keep it under control. Everything runs smoothly until Maya and her brother, exhausted after a long day of work, decide to forgo the cleaning for one day. Too bad the next day their restaurant receives a visit from a health inspector. And with the visit, a fine of $10,000 to be paid, or her family’s restaurant will be closed down. Desperate to earn money to pay the fine herself, Maya finds herself teaming up with Camden, the hot,bad and rich popular guy that she sees in the halls, in order to make some money and fast. And their plan is genius, Maya’s smarts and Camden’s connections with the in crowds have them setting up a massive cheating ring. One that only gets more complex as Maya’s friends get involved and Maya and Camden find themselves drawn to each other.

Just from reading half of this book I can tell that the rest of She’s So Money is going to be dramatic and action packed. After doing the cheating ring for a few weeks Maya starts to get tired and her own grades start to go down from the lack of sleep she’s been having. Maya then learns after losing her friends that she should have always been honest with her friends and her family. I feel that situations like this one happens all around the world in high school. Some of these situations are a little dramatic for the school I go to then again schools in the U.S I feel are more likelier to pull a stunt like Maya did. Only because they feel more pressure by their families because to live in the U.S and afford their housing you have to have a good education. Teenagers only think about what they can do to make themselves better and if they can skip punishment by their parents or disappointment by them. As I’m reading I can tell that even though Maya is the smartest in her school doesn’t mean she’ll make the right decisions for herself. The readers can definitely see that Maya had to go through tough decisions so that she could make the right ones.

In Mayas mind she probably thought that if she had told her parents about the restaurant then they would get mad at her and never trust her with responsibilities. I think that many teens feel this way about their parents when it comes down to the punishment they get all scared and start to make up wild punishment that they think their parents are going to give them. For sure I’m one of those people who start to get wild ideas about what punishment I’m going to receive even if all I’ve done is miss my curfew by 5 minutes, didn’t do something I was told to do like taking out the trash when she’s away, or even really small things for when I’m asked to make her soup when she’s sick. She’s So Money was an intriguing light read for me that I’m enjoying thoroughly and one that I’d reccomend to thoughs readers that enjoy a good romance and teenage drama.

Revenge Of The Lawn Gnomes Full Review

Librarian: Mrs. Worobek - November 6, 2008 - 11:23am

The book I have finished reading is called “Revenge Of The lawn Gnomes”. The book in the ending was really excellent but I still think it could have been better. Overall I thought that the book was really well written and was brilliant. I would like to read more books from this author cause he is a really great writer and uses good grammar. I enjoyed all his books so far, but I still think that this one is the best out of the ones I read. The nest book I think I’m going to read is probably by the author “Lemony Snicket“. I heard that he was an excellent writer like R.L. Stine.

While I was reading the book, it reminded me of how people like to take “Lawn Gnomes” from peoples lawns and take them to a different town or house and set them on there lawn. While the kids dad had bought the Lawn Gnome, there is a consequence because the gnomes came alive whenever Joe blew his dog whistle. The consequence of that is that while he blew the whistle, the gnomes woke up and did mischief and Joe and his friend/neighbor got in trouble for it.

I am looking forward to reading a book close to this one if there is another one out there. I sure hope that other people can start reading books like these ones by this author because they are really interesting and good. If people don’t read these books, they are missing out big time. One time my dad had told a story close to this book but it was shorter and he said “that there were these gnomes that always went out at night and always did bad things.” I was around the age of 6 but i got scared and was freaked out by the story. At the very end of the book, I thought it was really funny cause Joe’s dad had went to the store he always buys lawn ornaments from and he comes back with a big gorilla.

Jennifer Murdley’s Toad

Librarian: Mrs. Worobek - November 6, 2008 - 11:16am

One of Bruce Coville’s masterpieces. Jennifer Murdley’s Toad is an original fantasy inspired book. Jennifer is an ordinary girl with a normal life. Jennifer believes she is unattractive and ugly, but she will soon find that beauty is on the inside. The book starts off with Jennifer running out of underwear and forced to wear her brother’s undergarment. Embarrassed by her predicament, Jennifer and her brother promise each other not to tell anybody about it. Jennifer tells her best friend who can’t keep a secret to save her life and she tells the world. Jennifer is then tormented by the most popular and pretty girl in her class, Sharra. Trying to escape her fears of her bully classmates she runs away from them. As they chase her, Jennifer comes across a magic store. Jennifer hides in the store and notices some animals. Jennifer in need of a pet for a project she decides to buy one. This is how Jennifer comes across her pet Toad to be. The owner of the store, Mr. Elives, gives her a good deal on a toad named Bufo. Taking the offer she gives the man seventy-five cents in exchange for the toad. Mr. Elives gives her special instructions on how to care for the toad. Written on a slip of paper, Mr. Elives tells her to read it carefully and if she does not follow instuctions she will have to deal with him. Jennifer promises the man to take good care of Bufo. On her way home Jennifer finds that the toad can talk. Jennifer does not act in a manner that I expected. Getting a little bit startled Jennifer decided to talk back to the toad. I personally would not have talked to him but freaked out dropped him and ran away. When Jennifer arrives home she decides to get to the bottom of this mystery.

Jennifer is very self conscious and thinks very little of herself, but she loves her family. Jennifer is very caring on the inside and will do whatever it takes to keep her friends and family happy. I too feel that way but I know my friends are there for me and I shouldn’t do anything hasty or judge myself. Bufo soon becomes Jennifer’s friend and they share stuff with each other. Bufo gets Jennifer into some trouble some times but they still care about each other. I understand how they feel, they will protect each other from the forces that are after Bufo. I too have friends that I care for so much that I will do anything for them. In one moment Jennifer and Bufo annoy Sharra and she tries to take away Bufo from her. Insulting Bufo to his limit, Bufo plants a kiss on her that turns her into a toad. This is one of the things everybody faces in todays society. Nobody likes to be insulted or made fun of. Even toads have feelings, I myself dislike it and think its wrong. Sharra doesn’t care about what she does so she always ends up being the bad guy. Jennifer’s parents don’t put any pressure on her. They only care that she thinks she is ugly and has a low self esteem. Always trying to make her feel better, Jennifer’s parents are always there for her. Jennifer does realise she has a responsbility to Mr. Elives and Bufo. Jennifer tries her hardest to make others happy, keep her promises, and do her responsibilities.

Jennifer doing her friends and family a favor turns herself into a toad so that nobody else has to be one. Sharra is pleased with this now that she is a human again. This book doesn’t relate to real life that well in some cases. It does have similar circumstances. Everybody has been bullied and sad at some point. Jennifer for instance is very self conscious, she does what it takes to avoid looking in the mirror. Jennifer has a caring family though who love her no matter what. Having a difficult time choosing what decision to make, Jennifer is bribed by a witch. The witch is after Bufo and Jennifer does not want to lose him to anybody and will protect him to the best of her abilities. Jennifer is willing to sacrifice the the prize of bueaty that the witch is willing to give her for Bufo. I don’t know if I would do the same thing but if I had a talking frog then I know I would love him. An old saying says that beauty isn’t everything and Jennifer has to learn that. Jennifer does believe in herself though. Kissing Bufo she is doubled in size. For every kiss she gives him she is doubled again. Jennifer soon becomes a 5 foot toad and manages to grab the witch with her tounge. In television the hero always wins and learns a lesson. Jennifer learns that if she was beautiful on the outside then she would be ugly on the inside and have to learn how to be nice and treat others again. In another book I read the main character always smiled, she did this so that her friend may want to smile for her one day. Not knowing her true role in life Jennifer was able to smile and know that she is beautiful and can conquer all if she would just smile for herself even when she was down.

I would recomend this to all who love a good fairytale and a happy ending. Jennifer smiles all the time now and she has belief in herself. You might be asking, “What was the moral of the story?” Well it is that you have to have courage and believe in yourself. Jennifer found that outer beauty isn’t everything, sometimes you have to know that your inner beauty is what really matters. Because if you treat others badly, you might be ignored and thought of as ugly even if you are pretty. In the end Jennifer finds that her life is going to be interesting ever since the whole scenario with Bufo and the witch happened. It might even be a beautiful life. So the truth behind this book is that not all beauty is important, it’s not that it isn’t important. There are just some things that mean more than it. I personally loved the ending of the book. It was thrilling and even hinted that there is a sequel to the book.

At First Sight: Book Review

Librarian: Mrs. Worobek - November 6, 2008 - 10:23am

Jeremy Marsh was a young writer, there were a lot of things that he thought we would surely never do. Such as leave New York, become a parent, and most of all, get re-married after barely surviving a terrible divorce. But when he falls madly in love with a young southern librarian, Lexie Darnell. She made his world turn upside down and everything in his life changed, he was happy again. After dating for only a couple of months, Jeremy and Lexie are engaged. Jeremy has decided to leave New York to live with his fiance in a tiny town called Boone Creek, North Carolina. Lexie would be close to her grandmother and all her friends she had grown up with, I guess she considered them family. But she only had one best friend and that was Rachel. Lexie was abandoned when both her parents had died when she was just little girl, she eventually moved in with her grandmother, Doris. She was the closest thing to a parent that Lexie had ever had and Jeremy wasn’t going to take that away from her. Doris could predict the sex of babies, that’s how Jeremy and Lexie knew it was a girl. Jeremy wasn’t too sure whether to believe that it was going to be a girl so he jsut didn’t say anything. Jeremy on the other hand had two brothers, and he was rather close with both of this parents. He had a best friend named Alvin. Alvin wasn’t too happy with Jeremy moving away for a girl he’s only been with for a couple months, and for that matter getting engaged this early along. Alvin wouldn’t stop pushing Jeremy to stay in New York and think about this for a while, Jeremy refused and told Alvin to get used to it because he is crazy in love with Lexie and would do anything for her, even if it was to leave New York. Alvin still wouldn’t stop bagging Jeremy and trying to get him to stay, Jeremy finally admitted that Lexie was pregnant. Alvin was in shock, considering Jeremy wasn’t able to have children. With his first wife he was never able to, the doctor told Jeremy many times that he would likely never be able to father a child. That’s why she left him in the first place. Jeremy knew that the baby was his, because Lexie and him spent a wonderful night together, and that’s when he started to believe that anything was possible.

Jeremy and Lexie were packing all of his things so he would be ready to move in a couple days. Alvin, Doris, Rachel and Rodney all helped with the packing. Though Rodney and Lexie had a history together it didn’t bother Jeremy that much. Lexie was going to be his wife soon enough and he had her all to himself. And now Rodney and Rachel were happily dating and Lexie and Rodney were good friends and were happy with both their decisions. A couple days later Jeremy had moved to Boone Creek, but Lexie thought it would be best if they didn’t live together until after the wedding, because she didn’t want the elders and other people in the town to get the wrong impression so he moved into a little house in Green Leaf. Jeremy thought it was quite odd seeing as how Lexie was pregnant and that they were going to get married soon but decided to keep it to himself and respect her wishes. Jeremy couldn’t wait till the wedding and then they could start looking at houses, and the thought of raising a family with Lexie made him the happiest man in the world. Later on into the week, he and Lexie had been having great talks till late, more than one romantic dinners, and talking about their future with the baby. Jeremy got very comfortable with the little town, sure it was a big difference form what the city was like what he was with Lexie and that’s all he needed. But Jeremy would sit at his computer, and had no ideas of what to write about for his next column, no idea. He thought about writing about his new life and how it was in Boone Creek with Lexie and the baby. But wait, Lexie didn’t want anyone to know she was pregnant, it was too early, she wasn’t even showing yet. Jeremy thought to him self “there’s another idea gone.” He didn’t tell Lexie he wasn’t able to write. He didn’t want to worry her, she had enough things on her mind she had to deal with, the wedding, the baby, and work. Jeremy went to Doris’ to see if he could talk to her about his writing and told her not to mention it to Lexie because he didn’t want to put anything more on her. Doris gave Jeremy her journal, she has lots of experiences in there and maybe he would get an idea from there. But Jeremy couldn’t find anything, every night he would scan through the pages over and over, and all of a sudden he got an e-mail saying ‘HOW DO YOU KNOW THE BABY IS YOURS?” Jeremy sat there for a long time just staring at the message, thoughts racing through his mind. Who would do something like this? Doris was the only one who know that Lexie was pregnant, but no, Doris wouldn’t do that to him. Jeremy traced the e-mail address but all that came up was anonymous. He wouldn’t tell Lexie about the e-mail, it would just get her upset. Jeremy would keep it to himself. It would be someone who knew Lexie really well Or someone who wanted to start a fight between Lexie and Jeremy, but that wouldn’t happen, he wouldn’t let it.

Doris called Lexie crying, Rachel was gone. Nobody knew why not even Rodney. Lexie didn’t understand why Rachel would just leave without telling anyone. Everyone was confused about Rachel’s mysterious absence. Jeremy was a home and decided to go for a drive, he decided to drive past the library and see if Lexie was still at work. He drove past, but her car was gone, and the light in the library was off. He kept driving, he finally saw her car parked by the boardwalk and went to see if she was okay. Jeremy couldn’t believe what he saw, Lexie was holding Rodney’s hand, they were cuddling, they both looked very upset. For just a seconded Jeremy thought that maybe, just maybe the baby was Rodney’s. Jeremy left in a hurry and was in shock. He wasn’t going to tell Lexie or anyone for that matter what he saw that day. He was going to let it go and see if anything unusual like this was going to happen again. A couple weeks later he got another disturbing e-mail that said “HAS SHE TOD YOU THE TRUTH YET? LOOK IN DORIS’ JOURNAL YOU’LL FIND THE ANSWER THERE.” Jeremy kept flipping through the pages of Doris’ journal to see if he could find anything that explained what the e-mail was about. Suddenly Jeremy’s mouth dropped and saw something that he couldn’t believe. In Doris’ journal she wrote down all the babies that her friends have had and if she predicted them right, some weren’t even written down and that meant that the couple must of had a miscarriage. Then he saw the initials L.M.D. which stood for Lexie Marie Darnell and her ex lover Trevor. Jeremy knew about Trevor but why hadn’t Lexie told him about the baby? Did she not trust him enough? He got really upset and decided to confront Lexie about what he had read. Lexie was speechless, she didn’t know what to tell him. She told him it was a hard time in her life that she didn’t want to tell anyone about, and that she wanted to put it all behind her and forget about it. Jeremy understood but then he confronted her about holding hands with Rodney, she accused him of spying on her but Jeremy said it was only one time. Lexie had told him the full truth and the full story of what was going on. Before Rachel disappeared, her and Rodney got in a fight. Rachel thought that Rodney still had feelings for Lexie and thought that every time he looked at her he wished it was Lexie.

Jeremy was so upset he left for New York to spend time with Alvin and his family, they had planned a bachelor party for him, but the whole time he was down there he couldn’t get Lexie out of his mind. Jeremy sat alone most of the night just thinking, then his brothers suggested they go to the bar for a couple more drinks. Alvin said something that night that Jeremy would never forgive him about. He looked a Jeremy and said “Are you jut upset because of what you read in Doris’ journal?” How did Alvin know that Jeremy read that? He never told him, was he the one who was sending the e-mails? Alvin quickly reacted and said sorry, and Jeremy knew he was the one who was sending those horrible e-mails. Alvin had told him he just want to see Jeremy go through another bad marriage, when he knew it wasn’t going to last. Jeremy stormed out of the bar and went straight back to Boone Creek to tell Lexie. Lexie called Rachel and told her she went to Alvin’s in New York when she had disappeared. And said she had a couple drinks a spilled a couple things out, that’s how Alvin knew that Lexie had been pregnant before. One day Rachel was searching through Doris’ journal and saw that Lexie had a miscarriage. A couple weeks later Jeremy and Lexie went for there 3rd ultrasound. The nurse recognized something on the screen that was an unusual white line outside of the baby’s sack and went to grab the doctor, the doctor explained to Lexie and Jeremy that their baby was at risk for Amniotic Band Syndrome (ABS) that caused deformities if it attached itself to the sack, such as webbing in between fingers, or a lost limb. If it attacked itself to the cord all blood flow to the baby will be lost and they would lose the baby. They were in shock, if they lose this baby Jeremy might not be able to produce another one. This could be there only chance. Lexie and Jeremy could live with a club foot, or a lost limb, but not without their baby.

Another month passed and they’ve had a couple for examinations and everything seemed to be going perfect. The band has not attached yet, there was also a good chance that when Lexie was having the baby the band could attach right at the last minute and they would lose the baby. Another month and another month had gone by and it was time, Lexie woke up at 5 a.m. in the morning and had gotten rushed to the hospital. There was a specialist in the room to examine the baby after it was born to see if there was any sign of the band attached. Lexie was giving birth a couple hours later when they arrived at the hospital and there was no sign of the band being attached to the baby. Jeremy and Lexie had decided to name to baby Claire, after Lexie’s real mothers name. But all of a sudden Lexie’s heart rate dropped and Jeremy and Doris got removed from the room. Jeremy had no idea what was going on. The doctor came up to him a Doris and explained that there was nothing they could do. Somehow the liquid from the band had got into a vessel and made its way to her heart. Its was unpredictable, they had no idea that would happen. Jeremy, with a loss of words broke down, he didn’t want to see the baby, he blamed himself and the baby fot losing Lexie, if it wasn’t for the baby him and Lexie would still be together. He went to see his wife, she layed there lifeless. He couldn’t look at her any longer. He decided he would see te baby but he didn’t know how he would react, if he would be mad at her or if he would love her just like Lexie would have. Doris’ told him that she looked just like Lexie. He went into the nursery and saw his baby girl for the first time, he had no idea how to hold her, Lexie was the one who read all the baby books. he wasn’t prepared. But its true when they say that love at first sight is real.

We can never control out fate, or predict the future. We don’t know what lies ahead. Instead we sick back and take on whatever comes our way. But for Jeremy he had no idea that this was the end of his marriage. He thought him a Lexie would grow old together, and raise their daughter just like they had always talked about. He didn’t expect this and neither did Lexie. Life is a fragile thing and sometimes we take it for granted. Death during child birth is rare and they didn’t know that that would be the last time they would ever see each other. But i guess you have to keep on what your doing, you can’t let the past ruin to present or future.

Nobody controls our future, if anyone its yourself. Yes, you can do things that effect the future and what lies ahead, but you can never get things to go as planned or how you expected things to go. Jeremy and Lexie wanted to have a lifetime together, but that wasn’t in the cards for them, Jeremy was to take care of his daughter alone, because that was his only chance to be a father. And he didn’t want to be the father of anyone else’s baby but Lexie’s.

I recomment this book to anyone who enjoys love stories. And they don’t always have a happy ending, its reality. I loved this novel! Sparks really knows how to grab your attention and pull on your heart strings. It’s an emotional story and is filled with twists and turns to go with it. You would never expect whats going to happen in the end. At First Sight is an amazing book, and I recmommed it to all of you.

Found

Librarian: Mrs. Worobek - November 5, 2008 - 10:23am

Even though Jonah was adopted, he didn’t see himself as any different from his family. He never liked thinking of his birth parents or even about what his life was like before the adoption. However, after Jonah meets his new friend Chip, who is also adopted, his mind seems to be uncontrollable with thoughts. After Chip and Jonah met, they both began receiving mysterious letters. The first one reading “You are one of the missing” while the second one said “Beware! They’re coming back to get you.” Like most young teenagers would think, Jonah and Chip just thought this was a harmless prank by one of their school mates. However, they were terribly wrong. After encountering men and women that seemed to “disappear” and getting involved with the FBI, Chip, Jonah, and Jonah’s little sister Katherine, seemed more confused then ever. Deciding that they needed to know answers, they decided to meet up with an FBI agent and later discovered a list. Of course this wasn’t a grocery list or a Christmas wish list… It was a Survival List, with Jonah and Chips names on it. But Jonah and Chip weren’t the only people on the list, there were 34 others, along with their house locations. At first, the three young teens didn’t think much of it until they later realized all the survivors lived in the same town as Jonah and Chip. They thought it was just a coincidence, but they soon found out it definitely was not. After weeks and weeks of finding more clues, the teens still have many questions which remained unanswered. The teens minds were racing with much confusion that it could take them back in time… Literally.

Found is a magnificent book written by Margaret Peterson Haddix. Margaret Haddix truly shows that we don’t always control our future and situations may go as unexpected. Jonah and Chip thought they were living a normal, American teenage life. What they didn’t know was that secretly they weren’t living in this so-called-normal-life they thought they were. They also didn’t know that in just a matter of weeks their lives would be changed in such a drastic, overpowering way. Like Jonah, Chip and even Katherine, I have dealt with situations where situations in my life may go unplanned and change what I had planned for the future. Even though Jonah and Chip were faced with such a negative ordeal, most of mine have turned out to be positive. Growing up, I have traveled to many different places many different times. However during the summer before starting Grade 3, I was not too intreged with the idea that my family and I would be spending my whole summer in Switzerland with my moms boyfriend. We were mainly supposed to be staying in Zurich and then also traveling across Europe. Of course I was so excited to stay there but I knew I would miss my family, friends, and even my pets. A whole summer just seemed way too long. However, I later learned I was definitely wrong. Like Jonah and Chip, I have experiences that were difficult to handle but in the end turned out to bed just fine.

Before I was to fly back home after my exciting summer, my mom, sister, mom’s boyfriend and I traveled to Amsterdam by train from Zurich. After arriving at one of the many train stations located in the historic city, we quickly realized how… Different some people were. Drug addicts and dealers were everywhere in the station, scaring all of us girls. However we really didn’t think much of it. We were all too excited because we were about to visit the Anne Frank Museum. But as we were making our way out, my mom’s boyfriend, Ken, remembered that he had left his train ticket back to Zurich on our last train. Not sure what to do, we decided that my mom and I would look after the loads and loads of luggage while Ken and my sister, Carly, would go back to the train to retrieve it. Meanwhile, while they were looking for the lost ticket on the train, the train began to move slowly… Then all of the sudden it was gone, with Ken and Carly on it. Panicking, my mom and I tried to talk to the security, trying to communicate with the little english they knew. However, after hours of waiting and security frantically trying to help us, Ken and Carly came back to our relief. It was a very scary ordeal, but in all honesty, it was a perfect end to the summer that I was not looking forward to.

Even though my situation turned out in a good way, Jonah and Chip weren’t so lucky. After receiving the letters and having strange encounters with unknown people, the teenagers believed that their life was going to change very soon if they didn’t stop it. The choice was theirs - Fight for answers or don’t do anything. Without much thought, they immediately began their search for answers. They valued so many things in their life that they knew if they didn’t begin a search, something terrible would happen. If I was Jonah or Chip, I think it would be very inexplicable to handle. However, the thought of losing my family and friends would take its toll on my thoughts and help me pursue answers. Margaret Haddix really shows how people change with their family, friends, and other loved ones affecting them.

After completing Found, I realized how much my values have an affect on the decisions and actions I do. I also realized that in the end, Jonah and Chips situation may turn out for the better, just like mine did. I really enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend it to everyone.

Rainbow’s End

Librarian: Mrs. Worobek - November 3, 2008 - 10:51am

Rainbow’s End is written by Irene Hannon, who writes books for a collection called Love Inspired. Love Inspired books have various writers but different stories. This story is about a man named Kieth Michaels who is taken in by a widow named Jill Whelan from a storm. during his stay he learns that this place keeps him at ease from the pain at suffering that he had over the last two years. As for Jill Whelan she realizes that not all people look at her scars and avoid contact with her. Keith had shown Jill that not all people are like that, he looked past her scars on her right side of her face and shown her that he sees her as a human being. Jill and Keith learns more about each other and Keith wonders about her past that have caused those scars. But a 6 or 7 year old boy is hanging around Jill’s house and she wonders who he is cause he looks like he is being neglected. She finds out that his name is Kyle Corbett and he lives with his grandfather. Kyle’s mother died when he was young and his dad neglected him so the grandfather took him in. Jill talked to the grandfather and shortly he was killed in a accident. Jill decided to take kyle in for foster care, and Keith was with her all the way. Jill told Keith that she had a daughter and a husband. But they were killed in a fire, during the fire Jill wanted to save them both but when she went back in a beam fell on her. Keith had thought how much she went through in life and told her how his wife died two years ago. Keith soon finds that he has other emotions to Jill. Does Jill feel the same, Jill also had some other emotions towards Keith. Not soon after Keith left back home to see his dad and take care of some unfinished business. Jill realizes how much she loves Keith. When Keith returned back to Jill’s place he asked her to marry her and they adopted Kyle. Now Keith has a real family now and Jill has a new kind of attitude towards the world now.

Jill had thought that the world was so cold because it didn’t see her for who she really was, and it only looked at her like she was some kind of freak. But since Keith had walked into her life he had looked past her scars and treated her like a beautiful person. Is this world cold when you see some one different than us? Maybe it is cold but sometime there is something in this world that is warm. Someone that can look past the scars or other things that makes them different. We all have problems that show sometimes, and we can’t help it if we have a different look than others. And we all have judgments of each other, and we should keep them to ourselves and accept them for who they are.

This story talks a lot about the pain from these people and how they turned their backs to God.We all pray when times are hard, and we ask lots of questions. Like how, what why, etc. But in this book Jill and Keith always asked “Why?”. God shows his answers differently when you ask him why, people get frustrated and angry when they don’t hear the Lords voice. So as people get angry they start to turn from God, during time they learn they should let go of the anger and hate, and start to let love and peace enter in their hearts. That’s when God is telling you that he cannot answer the question why. Is God always by your side in every situation that your in? Well that question is very hard to answer, I thought about the question and I’m puzzled if he’s there beside me, through the hard times and good times. For lots of us we have turned our backs against god at one time in our life time. I know I have turned my back against him cause I got so mad and frustrated at the world and decided that I’ll take my own path at healing. After I realized that if I let all of the anger and frustration I’ll be in the presents of the Lord. When we look at this world we see that God does everything he can to help us and what do we do for him. He lets us help him when times are in need. Like Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. God had given us the strength to move on and given us the choice to help them. God given us the power to chose between right and wrong, he has also given us the right to chose for our own actions that we do. Like we can chose to turn against the Lord, but we can also chose to turn back to the lord and ask for his forgiveness

The emotions in this book is shown from two points of view, Keith and Jill. They show what they feel and what they are thinking. I like reading books from two points of view because it tells you how the other person is feeling and how they show it. The main feelings are pain, frustration and love. I feel that this book is based on the compassion between two people after they had suffered in so much pain from the past, and start to feel frustrated from all their efforts to try their best to overcome that pain. And having someone that had been in a situation like that you can comfort them and tell them what you have learned from that past. We’ve all felt pain and the frustration after that. But not a whole lot of us feel the love and comfort after that, some do but some don’t. Lots of us get our feelings in the way too, so then that distracts us from our other things like our jobs or work. As I think do we actually consider some people feelings when we say something, I mean some times I’ll say something to someone without thinking of their feelings. Lots of us do that and then we eventually regret saying it. It’s the past that haunts us the most and the consequences that follow after it. Are we just scared to show who we really are? Try and figure that out for your selves.

Rustlers Of West Fork

Librarian: Mrs. Worobek - November 3, 2008 - 10:44am

Rustlers Of The West Fork is written by Louis L’Amour, who writes books about the western life of rustlers, and outlaws. Hopalong Cassidy was sent by a banker who asked Cassidy to take fifteen thousand dollars to Dick Jordan who owned Circle J Ranch. Unfortunately Dick and his eighteen year old daughter Pam is being kept as prisoners by Avery Sparr and his partner Arnold Soper. Cassidy had herd that the Jordan’s were held captive at their ranch so he made a quick stop there during the day and saw both Pam and Dick. Then at night Cassidy took Pam and Dick and they rode out towards the mountain’s. Avery Sparr and some gun slingers went after Cassidy, Dick and Pam. Cassidy has no help from his partners Johnny Nelson and Mesquite Jenkins. This country is full of dangers like outlaws, animals, and they are riding through the Apache Region. So another danger is Apache Indians. Now Avery Sparr is hot an their trail, it has been days since they were out in the mountains. It is starting to snow and they don’t have any warm clothing. They found an old cabin and asked a prospector if they could use his horses and of course the man was forced to. They got to a town called Horse Springs where they found an old house for Pam and Dick to stay at. Cassidy found Mesquite and Johnny to go and get Avery. Avery went back to the ranch and planned to kill Cassidy when he comes to the ranch. But the plan was spoiled when a young boy told Cassidy about Avery’s plans. When Cassidy got to the ranch Mesquite and Johnny went to go and kill the men who were hidden for the ambush. When the two men killed the ambushers Cassidy killed Avery and left. He went back to Horse Springs and then killed a man named Johnny Rebb. Who is one of quickest and baddest gunslinger around. When Cassidy was leaving, Pam asked if he would ever come back to see them and he said maybe.

Who knows if he’ll ever come back? That is a question that I think of, The book deals a lot of promises too, like when Pam asked if Cassidy will ever come back it was like she asked him if he promises to come back and visit. Are these promises kept? I remember that one man asked if he could kill Cassidy him self and Avery promised him that. But he never got to kill him cause Avery wouldn’t let him. When people say they promise do you actually believe them? Well sometimes I do believe in promises but not always, this reason why is because People that I care about deeply say they promise something but they don’t do it. And that hurts really bad, this has happened to me a lot and I’m sure it has happened to you too.

Is this world full of lies? Some think it ain’t but it is there are also people who only do stuff that is affected by the people around them the pressure is either from the people around you or yourself, from what you think. Maybe Avery was around bad people when he was growing up and he thought that he should be bad too cause they want him to or the fact that he was so into being a bad man. People have to make decisions when it come to be a real situation. This book also relates to bullies. One of my brothers used to be bullied all the time. Stephanie, or I would go and give the kid a mean talk. obviously my brother’s family are the only ones care that he is getting bullied. Cause we asked a teacher to deal with this but they ignored the situation. It’s like that bully has complete control. And we all have been picked on in our life time. We get either mad or sad. Sometimes I get really mad and try to fight of the person that picks on me.

The world is sometimes a bad place to be, also it can be a total living nightmare to some. And sometimes the world cane be a good place where it is like a very good dream to good to be real. There are murders, bank robberies, stealing and other bad stuff that happens in this world that was set back along time ago. There are other gangs like street gangs and biker gangs. They are like Rustlers too, like stealing or killing. For me gangs are so much like Rustlers it is very easy to get into a bad situation with these gangs. There are so many gangs out there can we actually stand up to them and stop them? Some can and some can’t, like in this book the sheriff was too scared to drive the outlaws out of Horse Springs. Is it the same with us today? Are some police officers to scared to risk their lives? Some are and some aren’t, if you were a police officer would you be scared? Of course you would if it was a situation that made you stressed under pressure. It is hard when someone you care about is in danger too. Do we work under pressure when we have people that we care about when they are in danger? Well yes we do because we don’t want them harmed in any way so we do whatever we can in our power to help them, sometimes we go overboard an what we can do and we get more exhausted and we have no strength to keep moving for our own terms. But some might force them selves to keep fighting till the end.

Vampire Breath Full Review

Librarian: Mrs. Worobek - November 3, 2008 - 10:39am

The book I had finished reading is called “Vampire Breath”. The book was a very good book and very interesting. The book was one hundred percent well written and had very good taste. I thought that the book was the best book I read so far and was excellent. Th next book I read is definitely going to be a book from this author. My idea was that this book wasn’t going to be that good in the beginning but at the end of the book I realized that it was great. I am looking forward to reading R.L. Stine’s books some more.

The consequences that Cara had made in the book is that she went and opened the coffin up to see if anything was in it. As she did that, nothing was in it until they walked away and looked back. As soon as they looked back, there was an old man in it and it just so happened to be a vampire. I once had an experience kinda like this but it wasn’t with vampires and coffins. It was about skateboarding in a skating arena. I probably got a scared as the people in this story did.

This book doesn’t really have any connections with songs but there are Halloween songs about all the scary things (such as vampires, witches, ghosts, Frankenstein, etc). Although the book wasn’t true, the author made it sound so realistic and did a brilliant job on it. There haven’t been and connections with vampires in real life ye, and I sure hope there never will be. Most Christian people think that vampires are fake but who know, they could be real but we don’t have evidence yet.R.L. Stine

Pupils Produce Political Propaganda

Pingo Lingo - November 3, 2008 - 9:13am

How tough is it to create the slick political attack ads that flood the airwaves during an election?

Well, not so tough.

I stumbled onto a site that generates attack ads as fast as refrigerator magnetic poetry.

http://attackadgenerator.com/

I’m sure ten minutes is all you’ll need to create an ad that rivals any real attack ad.

Post a link to your “Attack Ad” here.

Kenneth Oppel “Airborn”

The book Airborn Has to deal with career decisions and values, the main character, Matt Cruse is a thirteen year old cabin boy on the airship Aurora which is nine hundred feet long, fifteen stories high and has twenty six hydrium cells, in the beginning of the book Matt rescued a older man from his hot air balloon. The mans name was Mr. Molley,he later died on the ship. After that Matt went home to Lionsgate to visit his mother, Matt loved to get stuff on his travels and would give it to his mother and sisters. Matt never really could sleep on ground, he was meant to be in the sky. Went Matt went back aboard the Aurora there was a rumor that there was going to be a new spot open assistant sail maker, just as the ship was left the harbour Matt seen a small plane with two passengers. He knew they were going to come aboard.

The middle aged lady that boarded the Aurora’s name was Miss Marjorie Simpkins and was a shaperone to the young Miss Kate de Vries, Kate was about the same age as Matt and was intrigued by the airship, had took the two ladies to their room, Miss Simpkins was having a hard time walk on the keel catwalks due to the fact it was like a metal grill and she was wearing high heels instead of wearing flat soled shoes. After taking them to their room. Matt went on to his usually duties, then Mr. Lisbon chef steward said that the captain would like to speak with him. Matt went to his cabin just inches away from the door his heart was pounding he figured that he was get the position of assistant sail maker as he went in the captain said he wasn’t get the position, because the owner of the company, his son was give the job because he went to the airship academy. Matt and the captain thought that wasn’t fair to him because it didn’t give you the experience.

This book reminds me of a war book back in 1930’s, if the pirate Szpirglas was Hitler but nicer. Some of the pirates remind me of some of the germen soldiers, and it reminds me of the Hindenburg before it crashed. In some parts of the book, it is like when rich people thought they had money but they didn’t before world war two, then they are rich when the happens. When Matt fought off all the pirates that made me think off all the young boys in Africa made to fight for the rebels against the army. How Matt describes the Aurora is like J.P Morgan and the all the men at Harland and Wolf shipping yarld in Belfast imagined the Titanic and her sister Ship the Olympic, the size of these ships plus the man power it took to build them, to know every little nut and bolt on those ships is incredible. just the magnitude of these ships is insane.

In the end of the book Matt was given the chance to go to the airship academy in Paris which he took so he could be a assistant sail maker on the Aurora. When he was in Paris he met up with Kate at the museum, where Kate was showing the world of science a cloud cat which were believed to be a myth. She Was proud of Matt for full fulling his dream of become a assistant sail maker. At the very end of Matt and Kate’s visit they watch the Aurora take off from the harbor and Matt whispers to it that’s my girl, and in his head tells him self one more year and he will be back on it.

Canadian Mysteries: Developing Critical Thinking

Pingo Lingo - October 23, 2008 - 10:02pm

I was watching the game, but Tampa was up 4-0 on the Phillies so I started “surfing-the-net-on-my-laptop-on-the-couch” again.

I’m in search of a word or phrase that describes the often endless evening hours I spend, well “surfing-the-net-on-my-laptop-on-the-couch”. If “couch potato” was the 20th century term for spending too much time staring at the TV, there needs to be a term for someone like me who spends too much time on the couch staring at his laptop computer. I hoped the phrase “couch surfing” might fit. I googled it - nope … weird way to travel … but a term I can’t use. “Laptop Potato” is more of person who watches TV on a laptop. However, I usually have the TV on while I am “surfing-the-net-on-my-laptop-on-the-couch” so I’m not even watching TV the same as I used to. I used to be a “Mouse Potato” or “Computer Potato”, at my desktop iMac far enough away from the TV that it warranted a new term. But here I am again, “surfing-the-net-on-my-laptop-on-the-couch.”

“Blog potato” seems close, except I spend more time “working” on the blog server than actually writing a blog.

Maybe I’m more like a “video game junkie“. I can admit I will play video games, XBox 360, Nintendo GBA and I have an Atari 2600 in a box in the garage. However, any laptop I’ve had, I’ve used primarily for work - lesson design, organizing, grades, handouts, tests, and more recently maintaining web sites, blogs, forums. Hardly a “laptop junkie.”

Help me find a term to describe the common pastime of “surfing-the-net-on-my-laptop-on-the-couch.”

Oh, I saw a headline for an article that suggested that the more older people use the internet, the better their memory becomes. I wish I could remember where I saw it, though.

Finally, I wanted to share a site: Great Unsolved Mysteries in Canadian History.

Time to shut down and watch Sportsnet. Oilers lost. Good opening to the season, so far. They’ll still be in a battle to make the play-offs in the spring, though. Riders play Esks Saturday. When the Riders play, I can’t concentrate enough to attempt “surfing-the-net-on-my-laptop-on-the-couch.”

Go Riders.

Washington Irving “The Legend of Sleepy Hallow”

Librarian: Mrs. Worobek - October 23, 2008 - 10:42am

The Legend of Sleepy hallow is about Ichabod Crane who is a school teacher that moves to a small little town called Tarry Town right after the Americian Revolutioary warthttth. The town is very old, was settled back long before the war, it has plenty old family settlements( farms, and the families that live on it) that moved there and never left. It was a beautiful town during the day but When it’s midnight that’s when scary things happen. Ghosts appear during the the night, but there is one that is the most heard of and scared of, “the headless horseman”. Ichabod was loved by everyone, but there was one girl he loved the most, “Katrina Van Tassel”. Her family was one of the wealthiest families in Tarry Town. Ichabod and Katrina spent most of their time together, but there was someone else who thought they belonged together, a young man, a Dutchman, Brom Bones.

who was a young and tough man, he despised Ichabod and played bad bad tricks on poor Ichabod. Ichabod ignored these pranks, one night there was a big party at the Van Tassel estate,Ichabod put on his nicest clothes and went. So When he arrived all he got think about was all the delicious food on the tables, after his belly was full he went dancing with Katrina then went to the porch to listen to the farmers and all their stories. He stayed after everyone left so he could to talk to Katrina, that was the worst thing he could have done. She said something to him that only those to knew, he left into the night, where he met up with the headless horseman and was never seen again. Some say that Brom told him to leave town for good, but some people even to this day still believe that the headless horseman got poor defenceless Ichabod Crane and kill him. The town people believe his ghost haunt the old school where he taught. I would recommend this book to kids that are between the age’s of eight to ten if they like ghost stories.
